Course Description
Walter
S. Smith, the co-author of EPA Reference Methods 1-8,
will lead the instruction of this workshop. The object
of this 5-day seminar is for the student to understand
the basics of the principles and practice of source
sampling as well as to familiarize the student with
the operation of stack sampling & CEMS equipment.
It is targeted at those who need basic understanding of
stack sampling such as environmental executives, environmental
engineers, and those purchasing, observing, planning,
or doing stack sampling or responsible for CEMS. The workshop
will use EPA methods 1-5 to teach the basics and then
branch out to other topics.
See
Agenda
This
course will assist students in the review of source test
and CEMS protocol and reports. The employee will develop
the ability to plan, guide, evaluate, and perform source
sampling measurements to determine rates of emission from
stationary sources and calibrate and audit CEMS. The course
provides detailed review of EPA Methods 1 through 5 and
other methods that may be encountered in the analysis
of air source emissions.
The course develops: (a) knowledge of the stack testing
equipment employed, (b) understanding of why the prescribed
methods are used and (c) ability to perform and evaluate
the calibrations and calculations that are a part of the
reference methods. Instruction will relay heavily on use
of the bias concept in evaluating stack sampling data.
Students will perform calculations on actual data of methods
1 through 5.

Preparation For The SES QSTI Exams Workshop
Return
To Schedule
Course
Description
Walter S. Smith, the co-author of EPA Reference Methods
1-8, will lead the instruction of this hands-on workshop.
The object of this 5-day seminar is to prepare the student
for the Source Evaluation Society's Qualified Source Testing
Individual (QSTI) Exam I, II and III. This workshop
is very intense. The workshop concentrates on the written
method details but not necessarily the "why" they
are written that way (although some of the "why"
will be discussed). . Participants will receive comprehensive
quizzes and other preparations for the exams. The purpose
of the SES Exams is to find out if you know the methods
in details. The workshop will center on how to find the
answers in the CFR (and in the process, hopefully, you will
learn the details). The QSTI Exams are open book with some
tricky questions, so the details are important.
At the completion of the workshop, Exams I, II and III of
the Source Evaluation Society's Qualified Source Testing
Individual will be administrated by ETA.

Smith can review stack-testing reports to determine their
validity or their survivability in court. He can also
provide expert testimony pertaining to air pollution stack
testing, stack gas control technology, and air pollution
control strategy. He can design testing strategies to
solve specific problems.
Stack Sampling
Consultant: Walter
Smith is an expert at reviewing data, consulting to legal
counsel, odor evaluation, expert witnessing, quality assurance
assistance of stack sampling programs, and supervising
complex stack sampling projects.
General
Overview: Walter
Smith is an expert in designing and supervising stack
sampling projects. He usually finds unique, low cost ways
to evaluate and solve your sampling problems. He can be
your in-house expert for the short period of time you
need an expert. He will help you hire testers, negotiate
with the agencies, and insure you get the product you
need. Air Pollution Projects Engineer: Mr. Smith's 39
years experience with air pollution problems (11 years
with the Federal Government) give credence to solving
complex pollution problems.
Nomographs
Designer: A
byproduct of this experience is the skill of developing
nomographs. He makes and sells stack-sampling nomographs
of his original design.
Odor
Evaluations: Walter
Smith is also an odor expert. He usually finds unique,
low cost ways to evaluate and solve your odor problems.
Combustion
Expert: Walter
Smith is also a combustion expert. He developed the F
Factor for EPA. He can solve these kinds of combustion
